The Small Catechism plainly teaches that Christians must be taught (catechized) to confess. Put another way, confession only takes place after catechesis. Confession involves examination. We absolve after examination and confession. After examination and absolution, we commune (Ap XXIV.1) Ergo, we commune after catechesis, not before. Not because faith does not exist, but because the Lord’s Supper is a proclamation, a confession, and such a confession is impossible apart from catechesis.
